I see that the owner & group for the /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/list.mbox/list.mbox file is root:root, but should be "mailman:mailman". In fact everything in /var/lib/mailman/archives/private/*/* should be mailman:mailman, so this was broken from the migration.

I'm having the same issue. In fact, sometimes the messages are held up and not sent out and can't find them anywhere. I did notice errors in /var/log/mailman/smtp-failure as well as /var/log/mailman/error I'm seeing a Permission denied on the archive mbox. I believe that's the problem here.

I've been encouraging them to move away from MS products for 10 years. But thats how old some of these websites are. Can't just abandon those people...

Actually, thats what I was doing. I've upgraded the old installation to 4.0.0 so that the database schema would match and a simple dump/restore should do that. I was more concerned about the directory tree. So you only need the "sites" subdirectory to be moved, right?
