Hi, I am having the same problem with php settings changed in php.ini are not loaded when installing Joomla.
Do you have this problem solved?

I also had trouble with downloading the i386 packages, but I found the following links that worked for me:
wget https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-security/+archive/ppa/+build/3566390/+files/libmysqlclient16_5.1.63-0ubuntu0.10.04.1_i386.deb
