SMTP Service Shutdown

I just received a panic call from a client saying their email wasn't working. When I checked Plesk, it showed the SMTP Service stopped. I of course restarted it.

Any ideas on why the service would just up and stop, all by itself. Is there a log somewhere that I can view that may hold some answers? Is it something that I'm running?

The first log you want to check is /var/log/messages.

I've had this happening randomly on 2 of my PSA boxes as well. It's a fairly new development, so I'm assuming it came via one of Plesks "updates" that they never show us changelogs for.

Watchdog was causing this a while back, try disabling it if it's installed.

I disabled watchdog and thus far, no more random shutdowns. Bad doggy!
