Switching from Mailenable to Icewarp Merak Mail Server in Windows 2003 & Plesk 9.0.1

New Pleskian
Hello,

We have around 800 of domains in plesk & the server is using mailenable as the mailserver. We would like to install Merak mailserver on the same & then would like to change the mail server from mailenable to merak by goin to plesk>server components. We are aware that if we do it, plesk wont be copying the mails from mailenable mailboxes to merak mailboxes however we are aware that plesk shall create the domains & email ids & settings in Merak.

Now since we have around 800 domains we have the below questions

Is it recommended?
Incase while on changing the mailserver from plesk & if the operation gets hunged or so then is there any way to run a script which shall lookup the plesk database & accordingly create the domains & email ids with existing passwords & settings in merak?
Is there any way by which we can transfer emails aslo?

Would appreciate if anybody replies their views on this.

Hi.. I have similar query? I want to revert back from SmarterMail to MailEnable.. but unsure what results I should be expecting or whether changing Mail Servers is even documented anywhere.. we don't want to keep paying to upgrade the SmarterMail license.. when MailEnable should be satisfactory.

Hello,

I was able to complete this activity succesfully. Kindly find the steps & info for the same. Hope it helps to someone

1). While Mailenable is running on the server, install Merak Mail server, change the POP3/SMTP ports of Merak to non standard ports, restart merak services & keep merak running. e.g run pop3 on port 111 & run smtp on port 26.

2). Stop all the mail services (mailenable) in plesk services monitor ( If this is not done activity will not complete).

3). Login to Plesk go to Server Components & change the Mailserver selection from Mailenable to Merak & the process will begin. During this time you may also change the selection of antivirus & antispam to Merak Mail Server Antivirus & Antispam respectively if you want.

4). After a time of 30 minutes or 1 hour, plesk may throw the error 'page cannot be displayed if you have large number of domains' however dont panic or restart any services/server & let the server be in the same state. During this time the activity runs in background & plesk may copy the mailbox data of most of the users to X:\Program Files\SWsoft\Plesk\tmp\._MailArchive directory of plesk & this may take hours (plesk wont copy the maildata from mailenable mailboxes to merak mailboxes). You can watch this by goin to realtime acitivty monitor of your antivirus program where it continously writes data to the ._mailarchive folder. Once plesk completes copy of mailbox data you can see that plesk writes the configuration to merak folder & by this time it is understood that plesk writes the configuration in merak. Plesk will create all the domains, users & email address with their same passwords as well as redirection & groups. On this completes you can see that the Mailservices in Plesk Monitor are being changed to Merak Services.

5). You may then change the ports of Merak POP3/SMTP to standard prots i.e 110 & 25 Respectively & reboot the server. After that kindly verify if the MailServer is being selected to Merak in Plesk>Server Componenets. If it stills hows to Mailenable then change again & in few seconds it will change to Merak.

You may then delete the contents under the ._MailArchive folder as plesk just copies the maildata. For me it took a time of 10 hours to migrate more than 500 domains from Mailenable to merak. The time may vary as per the maildata size you have since before creating the domains & accounts in merak, plesk copies the mail data in ._mailarchive folder.
