What You Need To Know To Have A Perfect Sewing Space

I know we all have different ideas of what a perfect sewing corner should be. My cozy space might not be the best one for you. However, all sewing spaces have something in common, an underlying principle that governs them all.

Here is what I think the most crucial criteria when it comes to making a sewing corner.

Sewing Room Floor Plan

Not everyone can afford an entire room for sewing and you don’t have to. A small but neat corner is enough. What matters is you are comfortable in that space and if you have children, space must have somewhere you can keep the sharp objects out of their reach. Pins, scissors, and needles, they all must be in their place when you are done with them

I have spent many years adding this and take away that to have this perfect corner now, with trial and errors along the way, of course. I believe that what I need is the same as everybody else.

Try to find a floor plan that you like and adjust from there. I will save you a lot more time than if you want to design and start everything from scratch. There is nothing wrong with making your own design, but you may have to invest in a large amount of your time for it if this is your first time. One thing I want you to keep in mind is you can never have too many power outlets.

A sewing space

If you intend to use a computerized sewing machine in your corner, think about some space for a computer. Now it’s easier than ever to browse for patterns online and upload it to your machine. A computer at where you have access to immediately will definitely a time saver. In case you have your eye on one of these advanced models, I have a guide right here Best Sewing Machine For Beginners - Top Basic Sewing Machine Reviews.

I have used the table in the kitchen or the living room as a sewing table for years. Stay away from a card table because it cannot handle the vibration unless you want your machine and project to bounce around. If you don’t want to stretch your budget to buy a brand new one, take a tour to thrift shops or some yard sales. I have found a bunch of cool stuff at these places. Use sandpaper and paint for the table you buy. You need a smooth surface for lay fabric on.

Fabric And Notion Storage

A place to store fabrics should be close to where you work, but when you find yourself buying and stocking more and more fabrics, you may need to find another location for them.

What I usually do is to find a place without direct sunlight or you will find faded fabrics when you need to use them. The spot you choose should also be dry also. I always preshrink the fabric after I buy them and stock them in boxes, bags, or bins to keep them smell fresh and away from dust.

My go-to stocking place is under my bed. I have small children so this spot is perfect. Sunlight cannot reach there. It’s clean and no one knows what is there.

Notions are small and easy to get lost. An ideal method is to have a separate place for them. I usually buy small boxes and put each type of notion into them. For example, I have a box for buttons, in which I divide the buttons according to their sizes or shapes. Another box is for the zipper. When you have so many types of notions that it’s hard to make out which is which by looking from the outside, the label is a good idea to manage your stock. If you use large bins, some cubbies inside is a good way to categorize all the different types.

Fabric Organization

A fabric stash is the soft spot of many sewists. Once you have been addicted to adding new rolls of beautiful fabric, it’s hard to stop buying.

What I want you to remember is that you may not use all that you buy. These yardages might go waste if you keep them for too long. So think of this before you stop at a shop because you see a good deal.

And minimize the time you spend browsing the Internet for new designs. The temptation of a chic-looking fabric or a new type of zipper may convince you to drive across the city to buy it. The worse thing is, your house might run out of places to keep them.

I want you to remember one thing. Your best cheap sewing machine for beginners can handle most of the types of fabrics if you know the right techniques so there is no need to think of switching to another machine when you find something hard to sew through. A good sewing machine can handle most types of fabric

Labeling can come a long way in helping you find the right fabric. Whenever you buy a new piece, label it with the information on the yardage and the fiber content. This can save you a ton of time unfolding and folding.

Economical Sewing Machine Tables

The width of the table is essential for sewing. Let me tell you why. For some stretchy fabrics, you want the whole piece to be supported to prevent it from stretching. Part of the fabric drapes over the edge of the table can pull it.

Remember what I said about having a computer nearby?

If you are a newbie using a simple sewing machine, having something that has access to the Internet so that you can search for something you don’t know is convenient. If you haven’t found yourself a sewing machine yet, here I have a collection of some entry-level ones that may help you find an easy to use sewing machine for beginners, see here Crafts Selection - Sewing Product Reviews & Craft Ideas.
