Plesk isn't necessarily the root cause here. Plesk sees the .maintenance file, and that is why the toggle is shown. The file can be left behind from a failed Wordpress update.

Does the subdomain have a MX record associated with it?

Are you talking about one-click installs of Plesk or one-click installs for third party applications? AWS has a library where you can easily deploy a Plesk instance, and Plesk offers an application library that will allow you to deploy common applications such as Wordpress.

Disable the backups going to FTP totally in that case. You can mount the remote storage as local storage, and have Plesk do what it thinks is local backups but actually remote.

You mentioned mounting a drive from another server, so I'm going to assume you have resources available and will throw out some thoughts. You don't need backups on SSD storage, so i'd scrub that completely and look at external backup solutions. Look at solutions such as R1soft CDP that you can...
