It turns out that when the server was setup the partitions were not set correctly and the server thought it had run out of space when it hadn't. A common fault with 1and1 it appears. Anyone else who ends up in this situation should follow...

I have double checked this and it is set to an unlimited package so disk space is not an issue. This is driving me mad now as I have tried everything I can think of and am just getting nowhere. Any other ideas?
