Disabling Clamd temporarily

I've installed clamd through yum and now have wonderful antivirus protection. It has slowed my server down quite a bit however and I need to disable this temporarily. Can I simply shut down the service or do I need to shut it down and reconfigure qmail-scanner? TIA.\
