I downgraded to Jessie and it works perfectly. Not sure how I ended up downloading the stretch version but that was the issue.

Thanks @Lloyd_mcse , I had not added that to the sources.list. I loaded my sources list and I see mine does not say jessie, it says stretch so looks like I somehow installed a beta version of Debian or something. I will try and get a non beta version and try again and report back here.
