Apache/PHP delivering PHP source to the browser

I'm running 8.0.1 FC4, php5.0.4 on a fairly generic installation (justs a couple of domains at this point).

My issue is: I have some custom PHP pages. Half of the time these pages load just fine. But, about every third or forth "refresh" on a page, the server returns the acutal PHP file to the browser instead of the interpeted output.

All the files are under httpdocs, there are no permission or base path restriction messages in the logs. And as I say, at least half the time, the PHP page renders just fine.

I'd crawled all the logs I can find, searched here on the forum, and googled for this problem, but haven't found an answer.

I welcome ANY suggestions or clues on this one.

Thanks in advance.

The PHP code files have a .php extension, the include files (only called from inside php pages) have a .inc extension.

That said, the server is returning the .php file to the browser, not the .inc file.

look for a .htaccess file in the root. i had this happen but it was because i had a .htaccess file there from a previous server and it broke the php.
