Changing the Document root and subdomains

Hello,

1. I'm using a trial version of the plesk panel 10.04. For the "default" domain (the one from the dedicated hosting provider) i'm trying to change the default Document Root without success. The folder layout looks like this:

So the default configured by plesk is: /var/www/vhosts/my.domain.com/httpdocs (appears in panel as /httpdocs)
And i've changed it to: /httpdocs/public (the /var/www/vhosts/my.domain.com/httpdocs/public exists and has proper ownership/access rights/content). After this change the browser gives "Server not found" error for http://my.domain.com/

2. When i add a subdomain for example www.my.domain.com Plesk creates two folders

/var/www/vhosts/my.domain.com/site1
/var/www/vhosts/www.my.domain.com

With the same content. It is confusing. Which one should I use.

Best Regards,
Alek
