email filter is dragging down my server??

I'm really clueless when it comes to managing my own VDS, but I keep trying to learn. This forum has been a valuable tool for me. I've been trying to find some similar problem posts but haven't had any luck.

I have a VDS with godaddy.com
Linux, Redhat
Apache/2.0.51 (Fedora)
Pleask 7.5 reloaded

This morning there were several issues with my sites going down and when I called godaddy they said that my email filters were dragging down the system.

I have spam assassian, just basic settings, so how can I find out more information on what was causing the spam filters to drag down the system?

I saw mentioned in other posts about checking logs, errr how do I do that?

TIA for any help and advise ...
