.htaccess doubt

Hi,

I'm using a .htaccess on a domain to set some mod rewrite rules. As the file is getting bigger, i'm worried about it being a performance issue.

Is it possible to define the same rules that i'm writting on the .htaccess file directly to apache?

I know that plesk overrides the apache setup constantly, so there's any file i can use to do my apache customizations?

Thanks
