.htaccess with auto_prepend not interpreted

Why would Apache not interpret a .htaccess file with an auto_prepend parameter?

/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf has AllowOverride All & AccessFileName .htaccess.

A "normal" .htaccess with require valid-user & .htpasswd works.

What do I have to do to get the auto_prepend working as well? Does Plesk block anything by default?
