Hello everyone. My first post :)

I have purchased a hosting account from a company and I kind of dont trust them so im gonna ask you guys. They are using Plesk 8.2.1 and everytime im trying to log in I get this certificate error in red.

My question is this. What does it mean? Does it mean that my hosting company bought a some licences from plesk for some doamins, has finished all of them and is hosting me in illegal way ? or smth else?

Thank you

It means that you are using the Plesk SSL that came with the package. But the Plesk Certificate was issued to Plesk. You are not logging into a Plesk website but your own. You have to purchase your own certificate and install it. Your "license" is good and the certifcate will do it's job but you ( and your customers ) will always get the "certifcate error" unless you purchase your own.

Can you recommend a good company to get a certificate from? The article seemed to leave that out.

Most of the larger domain registrars also sell ssl certificates. If your registrar that you purchase your domain names from do not sell certifcates, check Godaddy.com, Register.com or NetworkSolutions.com. I purchase mine from http://domainspaces.com, a reseller for WildWestDomains. Prices vary so I would look around.

First off, welcome to the forums :)

if you dont trust them, why did you buy something from them????

it just means that they are using a default cert, but in general that error can come from a self signed cert, or one that just doesnt match the SSL domain URL.

For example, if your SSL is for domain.com and you access it as https://domain.com you wont get an error. But if you access it as https://www.domain.com you will get that error again, even though the cert is valid.

There are wildcart certs you can buy that will do *.domain.com so no matter what it will work, but those are quite expensive.

I personally use Enom.com or one of their resellers, SBS and GeoTrust are under $10 - but thats fairly standard anywhere, its basically where ever you buy your domains from is typically where I recomend getting your certs from as well. if your buying your domains from a reseller of a large registrar, then you may not get the best deal on certs from them.
