On the server of my hosting provider I have the following software:
Versione di Plesk Control Panel psa v8.6.0.4_build20080722.15 os_Windows 2003/2008

SmarterMail v. 5.5
I have bought the new version of SmarterMail (v.6) and ask to service to install it.
Service told me that SmarterMail v.6 is not compatible with Plesk Control Panel.
There isn't a perfect integration between Plesk and SmarterMail (Plesk developers say that once upgraded SmarterMail, Plesk may not recognize it as a mail server and therefore does not give you more opportunities create new mailboxes).
I have wrote to SmarterMail support and they answered me:
"The SmarterMail API is backwards compatible, and standard functions of Plesk should still work with SmarterMail".
In the answer I note that they use the conditional!!!
