lame server resolving

I see very often in my logs (/varl/log/messages)

entries like this :

Oct 18 08:30:13 linux7 named[20334]: lame server resolving 'www.asacademy.com' (in 'asacademy.com'?): 64.34.167.130#53

and almost always the domains that are listed
in these entries have nothing to do with our servers, and never was hosted on us.

also the namservers are ponting to other servers unknown to us..

What is that ?

Usually this means that someone else's nameservers have your IP address listed for that domain.

I've had this happen on occasion. The last one I remember, a porn company in Hollywood had one of my IPs listed for about 100 porn sites, they had let their main hosting domain expire, didn't answer the phone or emails, hmm maybe they got busted? Anyways, it eventually went away.

mistake?
by accident?
can this have any purpose?

Anyone who runs a DNS server can put whatever they like in the zones. Whether their entries are right or wrong is up to them.

Sometimes it is due to IP addresses changing owners, other times it may be typos.
