Noob: How do I install PHP5 for selected domains; Red Hat 9

So I really shouldn't be a server admin because I don't know my way around a server AT ALL. Unfortunately my host basically said that if I have enough money to rent a server from them then I should be 100% okay with doing this myself... great logic, eh?

Anyways, what I would like to do is upgrade the PHP on my server to PHP 5.2.0 (I've gotten far enough that I have uploaded the tar.gz file and managed to unzip it!!). I would then like to be able to choose a couple of my domains and have them use that version of PHP for everything they do.

Now I have searched around and I have read a lot of threads, but they all lead me to dead ends. I don't want to install this as a module because I hear it will break Plesk. Is it possible to get some help (remember, I **** at this stuff) with how to install this? I really want to learn, so the more explaining the better.

My server is a Red Hat 9 server running Plesk 7.5.2. Current PHP version is 4.2.2.....

Thats a pretty old distro there, so you're up against a lot of extra work to do it on the platform. Any chance you can get a newer system? CentOS4 or CentOS5 would be a lot less work to do it.

They are offering an upgrade to Fedora Core 6, but it requires a complete wipe of all of my sites and they are not offering to restore everything, I have to do it myself. Honestly, that's a lot of work for me -- I've had a very hard time with one website in particular that runs a freebie gallery script (I tried moving it once before and just couldn't get it to recognize).

Is it something I really need to do though? Is there an easy way to do a complete backup into a single file (dbs and all)?

You could make a plesk backup (psadump) and migrate with that.

Is that going to have everything? And how do I create that dump and then re-import it?

Can I use lftp if I only have one server? Or how do I alter that script to let me download the backup to my local machine?

yum install lftp
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:

No module named yum

Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.

Yeah like I said, you're on a pretty old platform there. You'll run into all kinds of problems like that.

I really need to upgrade this server, but I cannot lose all of my websites! My clients would be a little unhappy.

And if its too hard to explain, or too hard to guess at what modules I do have installed, I am willing to pay for someone's services. I'm debating asking my host to do it, but I'm not sure if they would. They offer a service, but it says it entails moving physical machines and losing MY root access... kind of ridiculous IMO.

My host is being a PITA. They have told me it will cost me $75 per half hour, then I call again and they tell me they aren't allowed to do that...

It might be cheaper to just migrate off to a supported platform. You're going to have to do that eventually anyway.
