Password protecting a directory

one of our clients has requested that we password protect one of his directors in httpdocs, i figured not a problem since plesk has protected directories.
well its not as simple as i had hoped,
I created a directory in httpdocs named protected - then went to the directories button to set it to protected
I enabled protection
added a user named test, and a password
and attempted to go to the directory.
and got a password window as i had expected
and attempted to log in
didnt go through,
so i rechecked the username and password, and they were correct
so i tried a username that i use to admin the server with in RDC, and it went through.
.....
can someone tell me step by step the proper way to make a secure directory, that is visible under ftp.

thanks.

You can manually edit permissions and in in properties allow only domain user. But when Plesk reconfigurator will run permissions will be restored back
