Pear and open_basedir in Plesk 8

I found a very informative posting on how to enable PEAR in Plesk 7.5 (http://forum.swsoft.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25035)

I tried to enable it in 8.0 using similar steps (I changed the directories to the appropriate paths) unsuccessfully. I even created the vhosts.conf and vhosts_ssl.conf files, but could not get the system to incorporate them. I even rebooted the system!

Anyone have any suggestions or guidance?
