• Please be aware: Kaspersky Anti-Virus has been deprecated
With the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.64, "Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Servers" will be automatically removed from the servers it is installed on. We recommend that you migrate to Sophos Anti-Virus for Servers.
  • The Horde webmail has been deprecated. Its complete removal is scheduled for April 2025. For details and recommended actions, see the Feature and Deprecation Plan.
  • We’re working on enhancing the Monitoring feature in Plesk, and we could really use your expertise! If you’re open to sharing your experiences with server and website monitoring or providing feedback, we’d love to have a one-hour online meeting with you.

Question PLESK domain alias vs forwarding

Michael K

New Pleskian
In plesk I can create a domain alias and a domain of type forward.
What are the differences of the two concepts?
My understanding is:
  • An Alias allows me to receive emails under different domains (if I choose to)
  • When forwarding I can also forward to a page in another domain.
Anything else?

Domain aliases allow you to point several domain names to the same website. This can be useful, for example, for branding purposes.
Also there are two types of forwarding - Standard forwarding and frame forwarding with different purposes. More details you can find in Plesk documentation.

Setting a CNAME from an external DNS to a plesk domain, will result in the plesk default page. Creating an alias is the only way a CNAME can be properly resolved to a plesk domain site.

Is there a way for the domain alias to work the same way as a frame forward retaining the original URL instead of the standard forwarding that is currently used?

Or is there another way to point a CNAME to a plesk domain that could work.
