problems with qmail

Hello @ all,

we have a grat problem with a server (suse 9.1) and Plesk psa v7.5.2_build75050204.16, the build of qmail is psa-qmail 1.03-suse9.1.build75050128.10.

It start yesterday, the server is ver very slow, the cpu is in use of 98 % and the ddr ram is in use of 97.67% at all the time. When i want to look in the direcory of qmail, the ssh client hang up (not on other server`s). The log file mail.info is per day larger then 100 MB!!! In the log file i can show many many mails who was sendet an rejected, here little cut from the log:

The XX.domain.de stand for our hostname.

We have cheked the Server an many test say that the server is NOT an open relay. What is going on wirth the server, we have all cheked and nothing have an effect:

-Shutting down qmail = no problem solving
-Shutting down Users = no problem solving
-Shutting down server for 1 Hour = no problem solving
-Restart Server = no problem solving

What shall we do?

In two day we have need more than 30 GB on trafik, it is too much for this an in the log we can`t see what or where do the problem or wherever it is.

The original post appears to have 2 issues. The first is Spam, the second is that his hostname xx.domain.de is not in the /var/qmail/control/locals file.

/var/qmail/control/locals should have all domains which are 'local' to the server listed one per line. The error message "Sorry._Although_I'm_listed_as_a_best-preference_MX_or_A_for_that_host,/it_isn't_in_my_control/locals_file,_so_I_don't_treat_it_as_local._(#5.4.6)/" indicates that xx.domain.de may be the hostname, but was not actually defined as a hosted domain in Plesk, so would have to be added to the locals file, and should probably be added to the /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains file as well, using the same prefix number as the "domain.de" domain.

For example, I have "mydomain.com" defined in Plesk, but I also have the hostname set in Linux as "ns.mydomain.com", so I had to edit the /var/qmail/control/virtualdomains file to show:

mydomain.com:2
ns.mydomain.com:2


where the prefix number is '2', I added the second line with the same number (separated by a colon). And actually I just checked, once I modified the virtualdomains file, I did not need to modify the locals file.

The spam issue is a whole different matter which is well covered in many many other posts...
