Server Load and Memory Usage

Gents,

The last couple of days we have some apache errors on one of our servers. When checking the load is able to raise from 0.10 (average) to 90.0 (over 10 minutes).

I'm running a script what is detecting any high load and if thats the case the system will restart apache services. After that the load is going down again to normal average of 0.10.

After the service is restarted and access to the server thru ssh is possible again, still around 50 apache child processes are still running.

In this server there is 256 mb memory placed. Currently on this server there are arround 50-60 customers. Available memory is around 4 mb (not swap included). After rebooting the service (apache) the memory free is 128 again.

Could i say that apache is the one who is raising the load and do you guys have any suggestion debugging this issue because there is no strange entry within the access_log files.

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,
