Plesk doesn't ship clientТs PHP, it only downloads it from original OS vendor repo and it is quite likely it may be outdated there (especially for older OS). If your OS comes with PHP 5.4.9, then Plesk would run PHP 5.4.9 for clients.

Ok, so I have followed the instructions and now have multiple PHP versions. How do I install PHP extensions such as Mcrypt etc for the newly enabled PHP version?
