Use as hot spare or extra storage?

HI

I have a dell server with three drive bays. Currently I have two drives configured as raid 1 on hardware controller.

I have the option to make the third bay a hot standby or
use as additional space. I am not sure which appoach
is better with the Plesk 8 backup issues.

Is it better to enable the hot swap or use as space to store
backups?

Thanks

Chuck

You mirror 2 drives and you have a third drive handy? I would make the 3rd drive a hot spare in case you lose a drive in the array it will automatically rebuild. Its a failsafe. If you have the option of using an external drive I would backup to that, or backup to part of the live filesystem, maybe make a directory from the root called /backup something along those lines and then write a simple shell script to FTP it off to a remote server. Setup cron to run it at whatever frequency you want.

My thoughts. I always feel its better to have the hot spare onboard if you have the option on a mirror setup and backup to another machine (I use an NFS mount).
