Issue WP Toolkit won't clone multisite to subdomain - help needed

BT Marketing

New Pleskian
Hi everybody,

my name is Ales, I'm new here and I seek some advice or help.

As a technical marketing specialist for my employer, I'm the guardian of our digital footprint, namely the three international websites on three different domains. After a few chaotic years of different hosting providers etc. we decided to consolidate all sites under one roof.

As a person in charge, I insisted we move to a VPS environment with Plesk because of my good experience with it as a freelancer and because of the WP Toolkit features such as cloning.

Fast forward to the present day. After successfully migrating the first live site to a new environment my primary goal was to establish a staging environment for the site for the development purposes. It all worked well on a subdomain until I switched the live site to multisite installation as it's supposed to be in the first place and tried to clone it to the subdomain.

Even if there was a subdomain created, the clone function would only allow me to clone the multisite to another hosted domain webspace, but not on a subdomain as with regular WP site. I read the support docs and there are supposed to be some limitations on Windows servers. Any thoughts, ideas, walkarounds?

Our hosting is a Linux Cent OS based VPS with Plesk Web Pro edition (with limited access due to our host's security policy and their role as server administration).

My questions would be as follow.

1) If cloning of a live WP multisite is a no go what best possible alternative for a staging environment of a live site in Plesk would you recommend?

2) Will sync function, one of the reasons to go with Plesk, even work for pushing changes from staging to live if a site is not cloned?

3) Is there any need at all to change the hosts files on Windows machines for staging purposes in terms of DNS/IP resolving (how and why)?

4) Is there anything else to add besides wildcard subdomain and an A DNS record to map a subdomain adress to an IP?

I will be enormously grateful for any help.

Cheers, Ales
