Adding a new domain

When I add a domain using the plesk interface, and point the root folder to a specific folder on the server, what exactly i plesk changing on the backend to set that up? Is it a file or some DNS settings? And can I dynamically do this process using PHP? Just a note: I don't need separate hosting control panels for every domain I setup.
