Adding Photo in Banner but no Design Background

I uploaded a photo to the banner on a template and the photo showed up, but no design around it like in the generic photos that come with the progam. What happened? Is there anyway to make the design show up around my photo?

It shows up on the preview page but when I go into the editing page the photo that was generic in the banner is showing instead of mine. How do I change that so I can edit the page?
