adding PostgreSQL

I am currently running Plesk 8.6x on Linux and wanted to add PostgreSQL. I have installed PostgreSQL and seems to be running fine but unable to add to PHP for scripts to access. Is there an easy way of adding so I can access via PHP or is it safe to recompile PHP and still run smoothly with Plesk? Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.
