Best way to update os packages (SUSE)

Hello,

I'm using Plesk 8 with a VPS using Suse 10.0.
What is the preferred way to update packages? I heard once that using YAST sometimes brakes the configuration!?
Please note, that I don't want to make upgrades to another version. I only want to install security updates provided by Suse.
