can anyone help with mod rewrite ?

I am on apache system in linux and trying to get my mod rewerite to work with the htaccess.

RewriteRule ^cgi-bin/links/index.cgi newlinks/index.html

does not work, I assume it has something to do with the dashes, I tried a few variations by escaping it with the slash but nothing..

can anyone help?
i know the dash is the problem, because it wil work with directories that do not have a dash in them.
