cannot compose emails in horde (blank window)

Hi All

I have a server running Centos 5.7, psa 10.4.4 build 1013111102.18

It was recenlty upgraded to version 10, although I can't tell you exactly when this problem started. But when using horde for webmail, if you try reply or compose an email you get a blank window. The apache error log shows

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function filter_var() in /usr/share/psa-horde/imp/compose.php on line 128

I looked to see how to install/enable it at http://www.php.net/manual/en/filter.installation.php but it pretty much says you should upgrade to get it. Is there a way to add this to php 5.1.6? It looks like upgrading to 5.3 will force an upgrade to mysql 5.1 and who knows what else it's going to affect.
