Cannot send mail using smtp on any port

Wondering if anyone could help out...

I have a clean plesk 7.5 install running on fedora core 3. I setup one domain and added email addresses. Followed the instructions on how to get smtp to listen on port 587 but I'm still unable to connect using Outlook. Webmail will not send either, I can only recieve emails. It's as though smtp isnt running at all. Does anyone know how to check if it's running and if it's not, find out why and start it up?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
