Hello Support,

We would like to clarify the purpose and working behavior of the “Add IP Address” option in Plesk.

Could you please confirm the following:

  1. What is the exact use of the Add IP Address option in Plesk?
  2. If we add an IP address in Plesk, does it only register the IP inside the Plesk panel, or does it also configure the IP at the server/network level?
  3. Do we need to first obtain and configure an additional public IP address from our data center/provider before adding it in Plesk?
  4. If the additional public IP is not routed/configured on the server by the data center, will adding it in Plesk alone work?
  5. What are the recommended steps to properly add and assign an additional public IP address for hosting websites/subscriptions in Plesk?
Please advise the correct procedure, so we can avoid any network or website accessibility issues.

Most if not all of your questions is answered in the administrators guide:

But for answer them:
What is the exact use of the Add IP Address option in Plesk?
If you have additional IP addresses you want to assigned to specific sites with a dedicate IP address or if you want to add additional shared IP addresses you can add them through here.
If we add an IP address in Plesk, does it only register the IP inside the Plesk panel, or does it also configure the IP at the server/network level?
It will be configured at the server level.
Do we need to first obtain and configure an additional public IP address from our data center/provider before adding it in Plesk?
For it to properly work yes, you will need additional public IP addresses from your provider.
If the additional public IP is not routed/configured on the server by the data center, will adding it in Plesk alone work?
If you have multiple IP addresses from your provider, it's usually your responsibility to assign (aka configure) them to your server. You can do it through Plesk which will configure it on the server for you or configure it manually on the server and go into Plesk and have it re-read the IP addresses, then you can mark that IP address as being a dedicated IP address or a shared IP address
What are the recommended steps to properly add and assign an additional public IP address for hosting websites/subscriptions in Plesk?
Depends on your use case, if you're behind a firewall, etc. If you're behind a firewall, chances are you'll be using a private IP address on your server itself so you you'll want to make sure that is configured on top of making sure Plesk knows what public IP address you would be using to route traffic to said private IP address, otherwise just the public IP address is fine if it's connected directly to the internet without a firewall sitting in front of it. Oh and also setting the type (rather it's shared or dedicated)

Once you have the IP address(es) added, you can then go to a web site and update it to use the new IP address, you'll then want to make sure that DNS is updated to use the new IP address as well.
