Question Do we need to have Mail Relay turned on in this situation?

Alma Linux 9.8

Plesk version and microupdate number

Obisidian 18.0.80

I believe mail Relay (under Mail Queue Manager) is for sending emails from the Plesk Server to a 3rd Party mailer server.

We on this server do not do this;

We currently have:


Mailserver: Postfix
IMAP : Dovecot.


We have usage as:

- Clients log in to their emails on the server and send and receive.
- Scripts send emails on the server using cron jobs.
- All emails are sent from the server and are not delegated.
- We have not set up or tinkered with Plesk SmartHost
- Numerous email addresses forward emails to external endpoint destinations.

Is relay required for any of the above? Can we turn it off safely?

The server is live with client accounts and scripted cronjob mailings so cautious of changing it without being aware first.

That's correct. However I'd like to point out this is not a Mail Queue specific setting, but a general mail server setting.

Relay with authentication is required if you want your users to be able to send messages to any mailbox not hosted on your own server. So in almost any hosting use case you want leave the option as is. Setting it to "closed" will prevent you and your users to send mail externally.

Thank you, that's what I wanted to check. I had a mental note that it was on the required setting but I didn't have a mental note Why. Thanks!
