  • The BIND DNS server has already been deprecated and removed from Plesk for Windows.
If a Plesk for Windows server is still using BIND, the upgrade to Plesk Obsidian 18.0.70 will be unavailable until the administrator switches the DNS server to Microsoft DNS. We strongly recommend transitioning to Microsoft DNS within the next 6 weeks, before the Plesk 18.0.70 release.
  • The Horde component is removed from Plesk Installer. We recommend switching to another webmail software supported in Plesk.

Domain setup - Missing Glue record

I am trying to set up a Virtual Private Server (VPS) which has one IP address with Plesk 8.2 Linux/Unix and Virtuozzo.

I think I have set it up ok but my when I asked my registrar for .co.uk domains to point the name servers to ns1.my-name-server.co.uk they say they get an error while processing DNS auto delegation request - V024 Missing Glue record for ns1.my-name-server.co.uk

I do not know what to do - any advice would be appreciated. This is what I have done so far:

Initially created Client and Domain then .. set up DNS as follows:

System > Server > DNS Settings > Set up the server DNS template with my-name-server.co.uk and xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx IP. as below.

HOST RECORD TYPE VALUE
<domain>. NS ns1.my-name-server.co.uk.

<domain>. NS ns2.my-name-server.co.uk.

<domain>. A <ip>

<domain>. MX (10) mail.<domain>.

<ip> / 24 PTR <domain>.

ftp.<domain>. CNAME <domain>.

mail.<domain>. A <ip>

ns1.<domain>. A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

ns2.<domain>. A xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

webmail.<domain>. A <ip>

Then I headed over to the domains and in DNS settings selected Restore Default with the www prefix to allowed plesk to automatically create the correct settings.

Checked the system was running (with no firewall). Uploaded test.html file and through browser entered URL http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/test.html, returned file and displayed data correctly. Please note the Plesk Site Preview does not resolve but can access via browser URL as above.

Further issues with the uk registrar is they maintain there is no reason to have DNS on my domain I guess they are suggesting a remote service - is this a good idea ?. They also say it it is bad practice to have both DNS serves on the same IP - they should be on 2 separate Class C IP ranges.

Any advice, comments or suggestions would be great.

Hi Tiramisu
Thanks for the suggestion I had visited wiki prior to posting the thread, it is a good overview but did not help me resolve the issue, maybe I just can't see the trees.

Any other ideas ?

The glue record is one that resolves to an ip address the domain name ns1.subdomain.domain.com

In your case the missing glue record is the one that resolves ns.mynameserver.co.uk to an ip address.

You mentioned that the provider suggested that you have two nameservers on different subnets. This is so that if you loose a nameserver (due to a server failure or a network failure) then your domain is still resolvable. It is good practice to have more than one nameserver and to have them in different subnets or to have them in different locations (I run a couple of nameservers in the same subnet but on different legs of a switched network with multiple redundant links to the internet).

If your provider is offering to host the dns for you then I would accept their offer and have them do it. You can be the primary if you choose or you can be a secondary if you really wish, but overall there is little benefit.

Simon.

"GLUE-RECORDS" is something that your TLD Registar is taking care of.

Ask your Registar Hostmaster, to setup or change your GLUE-RECORDS on the Registars DNS servers.

Thanks for your replies. I managed to convinced the registrar to try again and point the name servers to ns1.my-name-server.co.uk and there is now no missing glue record and everything works fine. I am at a loss to explain this as I have not changed any of the DNS settings since I set them up.

I have no experience on the registrar side but believe that any change that has occurred must have been on their side. I did find the registrar difficult, arrogant and obstructive and unwilling to offer any help unless they could profit from the changes.

I guess there is probably is not enough information but I would like to understand what may have happened and if any one could provide an explanation it would be helpful.

DNS Management has a few basic rules when you are dealing with GLUE Records.

My lastname is "DAMTOFT" and i own the domain damtoft.dk.

If i wanted to use DNS Servers under the domain damtoft.dk, i would have to ask the TLD Manager for .dk to setup GLUE Records.

In the DNS world you have the following levels.:

. = ROOT Level
.dk. = TLD Denmark (Top Level Domain)
damtoft.dk. = Domain name under TLD DK.

If my name servers for damtoft.dk, was names ns1.damtoft.dk - how would the world know about me? - The only way for this to happen is ask the .dk. level manager to create a NS record and an A record for ns1.damtoft.dk. This is called a GLUE Record.

The TLD Registar is obligated to create the GLUE Records for you, but they are not obligated to help you with DNS Server help, configuration, setup etc.

There is no direct reason for the domain to be "offline" other than the Registar might have made an error - or if you have changed IP Address of you DNS Server.
