ECONNREFUSED via FTP and FILEZILLA

Hi !

I am using the latest stable version of PLESK on my private Linux server.
When i am transferring a large amount of files (new drupal installation) from my PC to my server via FTP and filezilla the connection sometimes inetrrupts (every 500 - 900 files) and i get a ECONNREFUSED error.
Then after some attempts to reconnect by filezilla everything works for another minute or something. What could be the problem ?

It often boils down to two or three culprits:

a) FileZilla (always changing, always the necessity to use the latest version),

b) network speed on the side of the PC (i.e. your internet connection cannot handle the connections and/or shuts down from time to time)

c) bandwidth throttling on the side of the server.

If you ask me, the reason for your issue is probably point c).

Two simple solutions exist:

- make an archive (or multiple archives, in order to have a faster upload speed), transfer the archive(s) and unpack them on the server,
- do not use an archive, but transfer a limited (but large enough) number of files for each upload.

Note that if your issue is indeed caused by server-side bandwidth throttling, you should then ask "why?" It should not be the case, not even with a 100Mbit backport, that your uploads are interrupted. It often seems to be the case that providers are promising a specific bandwidth, but actually do not deliver the promise.

Finally, be aware of the fact that any customizations to the FTP server can also cause the issue on hand, but I am assuming that you did not customize the FTP server settings.

A couple of non-technical ideas to try (unless you've tried them already of course):

- Open FileZilla's site manager and change the number of simultaneous connections to "6" under Transfer Settings - Close all current connects and try your upload again (this is just a workaround)
- Just for testing sake, have you tried connecting using the "Only use plain FTP (insecure)" option? While unencrypted, you may find that for your large upload it might work
