Email Alerts not being sent

I am using Plesk 9.3 and although everything looks okay in MailEnable as far as I can see, I am not receiving email alerts e.g. my backups seem to be working okay but I don't get the email advising me that it has run successfully. Same with updates etc. Can anybody help with further troubleshooting?
