Error pages etc

Just upgraded from shared to VPS and not tech-minded - so a lot of this is new to me.

Previously having used .htaccess to deliver custom 403/404/500 etc error pages, I believe that now I should edit the Apache conf instead.

Meantime, the defaults seem to be behaving oddly - and serving a 403 error instead of a 404?
