error when trying to add a subdomain

hi all.
i recently had to re-image my VPS (after upgrading to ubuntu 14.04 which plesk couldn't work with) and restored various databases from backups. finally got plesk to play ball but i'm still having an issue. trying to add a subdomain (a subdomain that existed before the server was wiped). i give it a name and specify the path as usual but then get the following error:

Error: Some fields are empty or contain an improper value. Do not use quotes, space and national alphabet characters in a password. The password length should be from 5 to 14 characters in length, and it should not contain the username. ('password' = '')

and the subdomain isn't created. i've no idea why it's complaining about passwords...there wasn't a password involved.
any help would be appreciated.

Please reset the system user password in given below path:

Domains >> domain.com >> Websites & Domains >> Web Hosting Access >> Password
