Fatal error when Backing up!

Hi there.
We had some problem in the beginning of our new SB 4.5 with the backup.
We were told to increase the memory to 512 in php.ini and that solved our problem.
Now the problem is back and I've tried to increase the memory more.
The more memory I add moves the error further doen in the file structure.
If I change the memory limit above 1024 the backup finally runs.
How much memory should the backup use??
Do we have to increase the memory with every 50 user or what??

We have about 800 users and 400 sites on the server.
I'ts a new Intel quad core machine with x64 OS 8GB ram (room for more than 50GB), planned for 6000 sites.

Hope that someone can help us clear this.

Kind regards
Fredrik
