Question How do I change Folder/File Ownerships, recursively?

Craig1986

Basic Pleskian
I am working on a website, whose web files have been assigned an array of different User and Group Ownership names. I would now like to assign the following Ownership names, to the website's Web Files:

User: Jane Doe
Group: psacln

Would I be right in assuming the best approach would be to log in via SSH, using the domain subscription's SSH Credentials. Then enter the following syntax ...

Code:
chown -R Jane Doe:psacln *

This particular server uses Debian, where a '$' appears, as soon as I log in via SSH. Does this change anything, in relation to my above approach?

Also, is there a way to be able to change Folder/File Ownership (among other tasks), by simply logging in via Root? Thus saving me having to log in to each Subscription, whenever I may wish to perform a change?
