How to upgrade MySQL to Version 5 ?

Hi,
I'm a newbie and need to upgrade mysql to version 5 on my virtual server which has linux and plesk 8.1 .

I've never used linux and don't know how and what file to start to get the installation running.

Also I've recognized that when I stop the mysql service under plesk, most of the functions are suspended ... including my e-mails !!!

I'm worried about messing up my virtual server, I'm really dependant on my e-mail.

Would I just overwrite the existing mysql installation ?

Do I need to point to the existing mysql installation path ?

What do I have to type in to get the process running.

What do I have to take into account to not ruin my virtual server setup.

Can someone help me a bit through this ...

Regards,
Frank

At present it's not something a newbie can do. Unless you know a lot about building an install from scratch in a way that won't break Plesk I'd stay away from it. So far nobody has been forthcoming with a reliable method to build MySQL 5 in that way. Eventually ART will catch up and you can use yum but that's still a while off.

It kind of depends on your OS and whether someone has built packages for it. If you're using CentOS 4 for instance, it's pretty easy as you can get MySQL 5 and PHP 5 from the CentOS Plus repository.

thx for your replies guys, I have the linux / plesk setup on that server. It was installed already by the provider. I hoped that it is easy to upgrade mysql and also php there ... but I'm not used to work under linux yet.

Frank

But what OS are you running? What distribution? What version?

Do you really need MySQL 5 specific features? It's usually the easiest and safest to stick with your distribution's packages, at least as long as your distribution is not EOL.

Hey Breun,
thx for replyin me in this. I have

Linux 2.6.9-022stab078.21-enterprise fedora core 4

and I bought a book to setup a database web-site which requires mysql5 because it is making use of the special functions. Also the news from the plesk software is that it is fully mysql5 compliant now ...

So I wanted to upgrade it but still have to make sure that all steps to upgrade it successfully are taken ... thought for a linux user it's a normal task to do, like for a windows user under windows. I know there cam be issues with the plesk software that manages my virtual server, but worst case scenario is to restore my server from my backup.

Do you think you can guide me a bit to check if it's working out ... ?

Regards,
Frank

It looks like you're running Fedora Core 4 on a virtual server. Fedora Core 4 is already EOL and I don't know of any MySQL 5 packages for Fedora Core 4.

I'm not sure that rebuilding the stock MySQL SRPM will work correctly with Plesk. We run CentOS on our servers, which allows for easy upgrades to PHP/MySQL 5 through the CentOS Plus channel.

Unfortunately I don't know of a channel that provides PHP/MySQL 5 for Fedora Core 4. It should be perfectly possible to create these packages, but I'm afraid no one is going to do this work for an OS version that's not supported anymore.

Fedora Core 5 and 6 come with MySQL 5 by default.

maybe then it's just the best to exchange the Fedora version to 6 on the server ... as long as plesk then still is running. I don't have much on the server right now which needs to be kept alive ... so I can check out things ... only I can't do it alone.
