IMAP/POP3 problem

In plesk at the server services IMAP/POP3 Server (Courier-IMAP)
is allways off trying to click start stays off
its been this way since i have perchased the server

did a telnet test to port 110 and got no connection

login into ssh tried to start it manually with
service courier-imap start

and get the following errors
error reading information on service courier-imapd: No such file or directory
error reading information on service courier-imapds: No such file or directory
error reading information on service courier-pop3d: No such file or directory
error reading information on service courier-imapds: No such file or directory

plesk version 7.5.1
virtual dedicated server
redhat 9

since i am new to plesk and new to dedicated hosting can anyone point me
in the right direction to get pop3 working?
