Inexistent subdomain fallback

Im running a VPS @ Media Temple but something is bothering me with my setup.

Inexistant subdomains on all my domains revert back to the main domain, ex :

(1) doesnotexist.example.com -> www.maindomain.com

I would expect it to be something like :

(2) doesnotexist.example.com -> www.example.com

(3) or even better throw a not found or something equivalent.

I've tried solutions involving modifying vhost.conf, but I find it cumbersome because it has to be done on every single subdomain. Surely theres a streamlined way to do this?

Also, what is the recommended behavior between (2) & (3)?

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your answer, you can see its been a while since this thread was started, however its not really the solution I was hoping for.

Its cumbersome to add that kind of wild card on all my domains, plus id rather have 404s since it messes up with GoogleMaps API. That means a lot of fiddling with apache config or htaccess's.

This "Main domain" catch-all-even-on-other-domains wildcard must be set somewhere in the settings or there must be a global way to avoid this no? Im really stumped on this issue :(
