I have a domain and an alias to it. I would like to switch so that the alias becomes the main, and everyone who visits the current domain will be directed to the new one (currently an alias). How do I do that?

    Thank you.

Alias is just record in Apache config files but base domain has own directory structure on filesystem and own configuration files. Therefore if you need to replace them you need to delete alias first, then rename base domain and add new alias.
