MediaWiki install problems

I have been trying to get the latest version of MediaWiki working. I have it installed, but am unable to get the image uploads working. I have been through all of the help files and and suggestions from mediawiki, but still no solution.

The error I am getting is: The upload directory (public) is not writable by the webserver.

I have set all of the permissions and still have the error.

Anyone else have this problem?
