Php fileinfo and magic file (Plesk v10.4)

I couldn't get my fileinfo to work on my install though it was working fine on v9.
All of my scripts using finfo reference /usr/share/file/magic for the magic file but I had to use
/usr/share/misc/magic.mgc to get this to work. When I look at this file all I see is a bunch of Quake game information.
Can somebody please explain to me why this works, how I was supposed to know this would work, and if I should be doing something different to get this to work? I've already tried reinstalling the file-devel libs with no luck.
