Question Plesk Multi Server Linux based with SimpleDNS and SmarterMail

Grzegorz W

New Pleskian
Hello,

is this possible to have Linux Plesk Multi Server solution which is using SimpleDNS as DNS server and SmarterMail as mail server?

I already have Windows environment with tested and properly configured DNS and mail solution and I'm wondering if I could use it in Linux Plesk Multi Server configuration.

I know that I can buy Hosting Pack with SmarterMail support but I can't find information if SmarterMail connector requires some local Windows agent or it just uses SmarterMail API? The same for SimpleDNS which has its own API so it can be also managed remotely without any agent installed.

Thanks

Multi Server does not currently support remote mail servers or remote DNS servers or Windows Server at all, so that's a non-starter I'm afraid. They are all proposed for the future, but development is really slow/stopped, so it might be a while. And a mixed Windows/Linux environment is not on the radar.

If it does become possible then remote SmarterMail might be a possibilty in addition to remote Postfix, from what they have said. The remote SM integration uses the API, there's not an agent deployed to the mail server. I doubt you'd see see remote SimpleDNS, more likely to be a standalone BIND server.

But do you know if remote SM Integration is using anything system specific since it is only present as Plesk Windows addon? For DNS services I can use linux based DNS server because it is not a big of issue to configure it but mail server is something else. I have good SM configuratio with multiple incoming and outgoing gateways and I would love to use it. I was checking Plesk documentation and there is info that API is being used so only http/https calls so it should be system invariant. I was hoping that I could use this extension in Plesk Linux and just connect my already configured agent less SmarterMail server using API to Plesk Linux with remote SmarterMail extensions. IMHO is should work since there are only http/https calls between control panel and mail server.

EDIT: When it comes to mixed environment I didn't wanted to do that. Actually services I wanted to integrate are MySQL which are being managed remotely, MS SQL which are also managed remotely, SimpleDNS as a DNS server which has its own API and most important mail configured on SmarterMail server which also is managed using API so there are no agent installation needed anywhere so bottom line there is no mixed environment here. I just noticed on Multi Server road map that DNS and Mail are scheduled on next updates (in near or more distant future) and it made me wondering for what can be used Multi Server if basic services like DNS or Mail can't be centralized yet.

Sure, central mail is proposed, but there's no indication of when that might be or if it would include SmarterMail support or just Postfix. I've asked a few times here and to Plesk sales etc and it has been added for consideration, that's all. There has not been a feature improvement to Multi Server for nearly a year, so I wouldn't hold your breath,
