PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Restoring MAIL from Server-Backup fails

STEPS TO REPRODUCE

details:
1. check for integrity of backup:
> root@h1604340:/var/lib/psa/dumps# /opt/psa/bin/pleskrestore --check-backup backup_info_1406070957.xml
> The backup file is valid.

size 2.97 GB, has been stored with the splitting option (2 GB max)

2. using the GUI (Language = German)
a. Start —> Tools & Einstellungen —> Backup Manager —> Wiederherstellen: Kunden des Administrators
Start —> Tools & Settings —> Backup Manager —> Restore: administrators’ customers (my first trial to translate a german GUI ;-))
===> fails
b. next trial: Start —> Tools & Einstellungen —> Backup Manager: Server-Repository
==> fails, but delivers an error message:

WARNING: (domain object 'ic-blue.com') Can not deploy content of domain ic-blue.com

WARNING: () Archive error: from /var/lib/psa/dumps/clients/ic-blue.com/domains/ic-blue.com/backup_ic-blue.com_mn_1406070957.tgz /var/lib/psa/dumps/clients/ic-blue.com/domains/ic-blue.com/ backup_ic-blue.com_mn_1406070957.tgz1 to /var/qmail/mailnames/ic-blue.com:
sh: 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
512 at /tmp/repo_transport_tmp_CF0V75 line 2.

c. third trial: Start —> customer —> control panel
=> domain configuration: from backup => O.K.
=> contents of virtual hosts: from backup => O.K.
=> databases: from backup => O.K.
=> mail:
—> Konfiguration und Daten aus Backup verwenden => fails (same message as above)
(configuration and data from backup)
—> Konfiguration des aktuellen Systems und Daten aus Backup verwenden => no error, no restored mail content
(configuration of the system and data from backup)

/Users/andreaskampmann/Dropbox/plesk_error/Plesk_Mail_restore_1.tiff
/Users/andreaskampmann/Dropbox/plesk_error/Plesk_Mail_restore_2.tiff
/Users/andreaskampmann/Dropbox/plesk_error/Plesk_Error.tiff

ACTUAL RESULT ==> pleskrestore is not able to restore the mails (10 mailboxes, 2.97 GB)

EXPECTED RESULT ==> proper restore of mailboxes

ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

When checking the backup size I got shocked: the most recent (automatically generated) backup is 1 GB larger !! (an none of the old mail got visible !!)

/Users/andreaskampmann/Dropbox/plesk_error/ic_blue_com_backups.tiff

I am tackling around since three days an throngs are getting critical. Please send me a hint how to proceed further.

Many Thanks in advance

A.K.

Update:
Since my Ubuntu/Plesk server is working properly (except this mail restore problem) I have tried to use mchk:

root@h1604340:/opt# /opt/psa/admin/sbin/mchk --with-spam
==> Checking for: mailsrv_conf_init... ok
==> Checking for: mail_handlers_init... ok
==> Checking for: mailsrv_entities_dump... ok
==> Checking for: mail_admin_aliases... ok
==> Checking for: mail_auth_dump... fail
==> Checking for: mailman_lists_dump... ok
==> Checking for: mail_kav8_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_responder_restore... ok
==> Checking for: vhostidmng... ok
==> Checking for: mail_postfix_transport_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_spam_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_grey_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_mailbox_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_spf_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_dk_restore... ok
==> Checking for: mail_drweb_restore... not exists
Errors occured in mail restore procedure
Some utilities have exited with errors:
/usr/lib/plesk-9.0/mail_auth_dump

But what does mchk wants to tell me by "Some utilities have exited with errors: /usr/lib/plesk-9.0/mail_auth_dump" ??
Which is a reasonable next step ?

Please, can anyone give me an idea where to probe further ?

Thank You A.K.

Update 2

Meanwhile I got mail_auth_dump failing fixed simply by inserting a password.

But the error message pertains:

Details
Warning: domain "ic-blue.com"
Can not deploy content of domain ic-blue.com
Warning:
Archive error: from /var/lib/psa/dumps/clients/ic-blue.com/domains/ic-blue.com/backup_ic-blue.com_mn_1406070957.tgz /var/lib/psa/dumps/clients/ic-blue.com/domains/ic-blue.com/backup_ic-blue.com_mn_1406070957.tgz1 to /var/qmail/mailnames/ic-blue.com:
sh: 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
512 at /tmp/repo_transport_tmp_ApmNV8 line 2.

We are using postfix. Does it make sense to restore to /var/qmail/mailnames/ic-blue.com ??
Can I access this script to correct this syntax error (inside plesk !) ?

I still would appreciate any hint how to probe further.

A.K.

Meanwhile the restored mail boxes (WITHOUT previous mail content !!) are getting busy again, but still I cannot offer
my customers any access to their old mails.

Best of all would be an opportunity to restore the mail boxes CONTENT WITHOUT CORRUPTING the recent content.
==> Can anyone give me hint ??

Second best option is to unwrap my backup file(s) and restore manually (without corrupting the new content !!)
I only found an elder solution for windows(http://kb.parallels.com/en/115107).
My OS is Ubuntu: Plesk 11.5.30 Update on Ubuntu 12.04. Does anyone can send me a reference ??

Third best option is to unwrap and save the mail content independently and offer access to the customers.
Does anyone has experience doing this ??

Any hint is highly desired !

Thanks A.K.

AndKam, I'm in a similar boat in that we recovered much mail data, including the queue directory where messages apparently are stored. I've been able to get email up and running, but want to try and restore older email and don't know how to go about it. I'm running CENTOS6, however on Plesk 11.0.9. So, if you or anyone else can help, it would be greatly appreciated. We're not sure what we can safely restore without overriding the current account settings and emails.
